Due to the huge number of stars littering the skies above, nighttime landscapes within the Pegasus Kingdom are a checkerboard of darkness and multicolored shadows. Whole galaxies are almost distinguishable to the untrained eye, and the colored stars lend their light to make the daytime skies hot and bright, and the nights like gemstone-encrusted black rock.

It is under one such a prismatic, nighttime sky that three cloaked figures move, their horses tied far from their goal, less their whereabouts be found out. The leader motioned with an ornate black glove to the others, and his comrades dispersed silently about the rocky area. They flitted from shadow to shadow until each was in position around what appeared to be a large campsite. Wagons and sleeping figures abounded, though not a single campfire was lit. They won’t venture far, their jobs being to keep an eye on the campsite’s designated watchmen.

In his position atop a large boulder, the leader drew the string of his crystal bow back to his cheek, notching a pale, golden arrow. Eyes locked on his targets below, he whispered a single word and loosed three arrows, in quick succession, into the night. There was no thud or even a flash of light marking the arrows’ path. Only a barely noticeable gold mark adorning each of the wagons. His job done, he dropped his gloved hands, allowing the bow to disappear into the air as though it had never existed at all.

His comrades would be heading back to the horses now, and he was expected there too. Still, the leader of the cloaked band hesitated to leave his perch and his eyes scanned the campsite below with curiosity. Or could it be mirth? In an instant, he made up his mind and drew the crystalline bow again, another gold arrow notched.

When he shot this time, a volley of glinting arrows flew, each landing with a loud thwak, close enough to pin a sleeping figure to the ground. Someone from the campsite sounded an alarm and yells broke out everywhere as men discovered being trapped by their own clothing. Chaos ensued as the campers realized the arrows were stronger than they looked, and difficult to remove from where they were buried. By the time anyone could figure out where the arrows had come from, the cloaked figure was already halfway to his horse, a smirk under his face mask and laughter in his eyes.

“Did you hear? The Makka Clan was raided this morning-- by the royal army!”
“Why would the army have been involved?”
“I heard they ran into them at random. Just lucky, I s’pose”
“About time, I say. Those clansmen have been terrorizing the Eastern Pass for months now. The royals should have gotten involved sooner!”

The same conversation had been repeated through the taverns closest to the Eastern Pass all day. Despite being the tenth time he’d heard it, Prince Faris Algenib, second born to the Pegasus Kingdom’s throne, couldn't help but snicker under his hood and face mask. His amusement didn't last long. He was cut off by a sharp elbow to the ribs, compliments of the stern looking woman next to him.

“Come on, Shera, you’re going to bruise me if you keep doing that,” Faris whined and wrapped a protective arm across the targeted area. The only response his comment elicited was a sidelong glare as sharp as one of his second-in-command’s knives.

“Ya shoudna be worried, Faris. Losin’ a fight ta She-Devil Shera ain’t ta thing ter be embarrassed of. Greater men than you haf’ lost more than a rib ta her,” Caven, the large blond man, and comrade to the other two, said after hiding his own smirk behind a tankard of ale. “Anyhm, ‘s yer own fault,” he mumbled, avoiding his Prince’s own accusatory glare.

“Hey now, that’s not fair!” Faris protested. Shera, who had been disapprovingly silent all day, finally snapped.

“You had one job, sir.”

Both Faris and Caven shrunk from the short woman’s words.

“Shera, this isn’t the place to talk about this right now...” The Prince attempted to calm his second-in-command, but she was on a roll now. There would be no mercy.

“One job! All you had to do was plant the tracers and we would have been done. But NO. For whatever God-forsaken reason you felt it was necessary to wake up and attack the whole goddam clan! We could be home right now! If you hadn’t... gRRAHH!” She clenched and unclenched her fists, as though pretending to strangle the Prince cowering before her. Even Caven, who was easily twice the woman’s size, knew he wouldn’t live long if he interfered, despite the pleading look in Feris’s eyes.

“It... it was just a little fun. No one got hurt...” Faris tried to argue but his blithe response only seemed to make Shera angrier.

She slammed her hands on the table, catching the attention of a few other patrons, and captured his clear blue eyes with her harsh amber ones. She won the staring contest. She always did.

“Might I remind you, sir, that you have a responsibility to more than just yourself now,” she said, low enough so only her Prince and comrade could hear her. Faris visibly flinched and she walked out of the tavern, patrons moving out of her way, unnerved by the fuming woman.

“Damn, does she always have to be like that?” Faris asked quietly, after the others in the tavern had returned to their own conversations.

“She inna wrong, ya know,” Caven responded. He took a long draft from his tankard and watched his Prince contemplate.

“Yeah... I know,” Faris replied, anxiously fingering the pale blue-silver thread embellishments of his black leather henshin glove. He couldn’t bring himself to meet his companion’s eyes as he replayed the past night’s mission in his head.

It was just some harmless fun. Nothing wrong with that every now and then, right?

My submission for :iconwriterssenshipageant:! I'm really excited about this contest, and this character :D If you are at all familiar with the drawing I did of Soldier Pegasi earlier, you'll note that I've changed up some things in his design, and fixed a typo I'd apparently included in his name :p

Senshi Name: Soldier Pegasi

Civilian Name: Prince Faris Algenib

Sex: Male

Age: 22

Realm of Influence: Wind/Precision

Appearance: Though a prince, Faris is most often seen dressed like some sort of desert vagabond. He prefers light, loose clothing and only as many accessories as is practical. He stands at 6 ft tall with a muscular build, having spent most of his life training as a mounted archer in the royal army. Due to travelling so often through his planet’s rough and ragged rural areas, his normally olive skin is tanned even darker from being exposed to the elements. His black hair is cropped short, often sporting helmet hair. His eyes shine a pale blue, usually accompanied with a white-toothed grin. Most notable feature might be a grouping of three short scars running across his right eyebrow, probably from some claw-like weapon. Many other scars pepper his body, but these are the most noticeable.

Fuku: Despite Soldier Pegasi’s henshin phrase, his fuku does not include wings. Though it could be argued his deep blue cape, split down the middle, pinned and draped around his shoulders like a sailor collar, look wing-like when flying behind him. left left side of his chest is clad in a blue-silver metal chestplate, a similar armor protects the inside of his forearms and as a turkish-styled helmet on his head, all of which are decorated with an engraved piercing arrow pattern. Underneath the armor is a simple, long-sleeved white tunic and matching pants, the bottom of which are tucked into hard, black leather riding boots. His hands are covered with ornately embroidered, black leather archery gloves. A short, white sheet covers most of his face and attach on either side of his helmet, a light blue stripe running across the top. Gold accents on the armor and leather complete his look.

Henshin item: His henshin item is actually his shooting glove, specifically the right one. While untransformed, he wears it most everywhere. The glove is made of black leather with blue-silver metal thread embroidering the arrow burst design on it. When transformed, his left hand is encased in an identical glove.

Henshin phrase: “Spirit of Pegasus! Give Me Wings!”

Henshin description: Faris holds up his gloved hand and shouts his henshin phrase. Immediately his hand is engulfed in a white-blue light and large wings spring from his back before covering him and dissipating, leaving him standing as Soldier Pegasi. Behind him, there appears to be a ghost of a white-blue Pegasus.

Weapon (if any): Pegasi’s bow and arrows are non-material and can be summoned as needed; he has no quiver to speak of. That said, both bow and arrows appear to be made of a very fine, translucent, crystal material; the bow taking on a pale blue color and the arrows a pale gold. He can use the bow in a defensive way, proving it is solid when summoned. The arrows do not disappear after being shot, and have proven to be very difficult to break.

Attacks:
"Trace" - This is not an offensive attack. Instead, anything the arrow hits is then marked with a barely noticeable gold symbol, which can be tracked by using one of Pegasi's arrows as a compass. Pegasi is not the only one who can track these marks, so long as the other party has one of his arrows to use.

"Pin" - When using this move, whatever is hit is then paralyzed. If a "pinning" arrow hits a target's arm (for instance), the arrows do not appear to do any damage, they simply paralyze whatever target they hit.

"Blacken the Sky" - A very powerful attack Pegasi does not enjoy using unless in dire circumstances. After shooting a single arrow high into the sky, it spits into hundreds of arrows which rain down on a huge area of enemies. This is a lethal attack, and targets unfortunate enough to be caught under it will undoubtedly end up as golden pincushions by the end of the attack. Obviously, this attack is meant for situations of war, rather than regular use.

Background: Prince Faris Algenib was the second son, born into the absolute monarchy ruling the Pegasus Archipelago (located within the Pegasus constellation). Despite spending most of his young life being groomed for the throne alongside his older brother, Prince Saleel Algenib, Faris never wanted the crown. His brother was always better suited for court life, while Faris spent as much time as he could in the stables and the field with the army. As the brothers grew, it was more and more obvious to everyone which brother would be selected as the Sultan's predecessor.

Shortly after Faris turned 21, Saleel was crowned as the Pegasus Kingdom's 87th Sultan. An occasion to celebrate in it's own right, no one in the capital could have predicted that on that same day, Prince Faris would also undergo a power transfer. It was a surprise to everyone, most of all to Faris, that he would be chosen by the Spirit of Pegasus to take up the mantle of Soldier Pegasi.

Why the prince was chosen as a senshi was puzzling, as it was not a common occurrence in the Kingdom's history (senshi usually coming from all walks of life). Even more mysterious was that no other senshi of Pegasus was revealed. Historically, there had been four senshi representing and protecting the Pegasus Archipelago. Thus, Faris's manifestation as the only senshi of Pegasus has tinged his title with suspicion from people across the kingdom. Being the Sultan's brother does much to improve people's trust of him as their divine protector, but there has been, without a doubt, an air of unease permeating the land since the inauguration of both the young Sultan, and the single senshi.

I liked the story - you get a very clear idea of Faris' personality and it's a nice little introduction to his world.

Bio was informative - particularly the background section.  I look forward to seeing if you expand on any of the snippets it discloses :D
